I was expecting the option of "Automatically prefill the label" would give a default value that could be overridden if desired. My experience with this module is that the user-override of the prefilled value is not saving, and the prefill default is returning even if user overrides.

Same here. This was an unpleasant surprise. :-(

Hey @aklump,
I am not able to reproduce the issue, could you please steps to reproduce this issue?

Thank you!

What I see in Drupal 8 is that overriding the title of an Entity does not happen.
As an example, when I Automatically generate the label and hide the label field, the title field is hidden but the generated name is now the name of the content.
When I select Automatically generate the label if the label field is left empty, the generated name is again the title of the content.
When I select Automatically prefill the label and there is no pattern for the label, I have to give the Title a name. When I select one of the available tokens, it inserts the name of the token as the title. i.e. current-date produces current-date for the title and [current-date] produces [current-date] for the title.

Is this still a problem in the latest dev branch?

yes, "automatically generate the label if the label field is left empty" is not working for me on Drupal 8 using latest dev.
