I have privatemsg module installed but I don't see the private message link in the author block

Which versions do you use? Have you checked Privatemsg issue queue?

Is the author pane user you looking on different from the logged in user?
Do the users have the right permission?

oh I didn't know it had user permissions but that fixed the problem
