Add [user] token support would be great. Not sure if it is possible with Drupal 6 like in Drupal 7.

Hi Heshan the purpose of this feature is to keep it as simple as possible, you can use realname that has more options.

Indeed if you can play with the profile node title you can customize the display. Check the #1889298: Build username from a configurable pattern for more info.
