It would be a neat feature to choose the starting frame of the video so that before the video starts there is some sort of preview image, rather than a large black box.

How would you like to choose the first frame? If you want the actual first frame of the video, you'd need extra software like ffmpeg to render it. Or would you like to assign another image asset as the first frame for instance?

This is possible by implementing media_mover and the FLVMediaPlayer module.
