ryanishungry commentedhey there
is there a reason not to use the theme currently cloned from stack overflow?
is it not drupal friendly? that's the theme i'm looking to use essentially.

eaton commentedSimply put, the 'clone' theme is illegal! The StackOverflow design was built for that site, and is copyright StackOverflow llc. I used its layout and color scheme for a temporary demo, but replacing that on the demo site is a top priority.
ryanishungry commentedthe theme is mostly just CSS styling right?
i'm pretty sure they can't copyright CSS styling.
or do you just want to make sure that it has the same functionality
but a more unique look, so it's not to blatant rip off.
there is another platform called plurk that has the same functionality
http://opensource.plurk.com/solace/
and similar design.

voidfiles commentedIf we could see like the php templates your using that would be great, I can't seem to get like the tags working, in my views templates.
eaton commentedCSS Styling and images are definitely copyrightable. It can be argued that slavish duplication of certain HTML can be a violation of copyright. We generally don't run into this in the Drupal community, because we value GPLing themes whenever possible, but it's a serious issue on the rest of the web and isn't taken lightly.
The templates for the Views in particular are actually very, very simple and don't do much heavy lifting at all. I want to reiterate that I will not be releasing any elements of the theme, as it doesn't do anything special. The only 'magic' comes from the use of StackOverflow's own HTML markup, and sticking the values of each field in a Views row into that markup. I'm looking for someone who would be interested in helping build a theme that is useful and attactive for it without cloning StackOverflow's precise layout and design.

ryanishungry commentedi was researching last night and serveral folks agreed, that yes the css design can be fully copyrighted.
i know some drupal designers who might be into helping.
i have to go convince them now...
voidfiles commentedSo when we say different from stackoverflow, do you mean build something that doesn't use there css or re-imagines there interface?
eaton commentedRight. The basic concepts -- present key user information, present questions sorted in various ways, etc -- are sound and IMO perfectly reasonable to adopt. But slavish duplication of the layout and UI for stackoverflow makes me uncomfortable. For one, it forces us to jam in certain half-baked features that aren't ready in the ArrayShift setup yet (like user badges, which are featured all over in the S.O. user interface).
voidfiles commentedSo the work I am doing on this site, I think, could turn into a theme of some kind. Could you let me know if I am heading in the right direction.

ryanishungry commentedhey voidfiles
i love the way 'explain this' is looking.
also like that some nice, basic functionality is showing up (login on sidebar, big box with question field up top, etc). these were things i could not get to show up nicely on my install. i would love to use this as a basic theme to customize.
is this possible to share it? can we collaborate?
voidfiles commentedYeah, I have been trying to make something usefull, for everyone I will attach the theme here.
ryanishungry commentedgreat, i look forward to it. let me know what kind of feedback you might be looking for.
-ryanne
Comment #13
voidfiles commentedHere it is, any feed back would be nice, the problem with feedback is that I built this for a specific reason, and your sites might differ in needs.
But I would love you to tell me about anything you think is broken. Also this theme is a derrivative of yui_theme which is based on the yui grids.
ryanishungry commentedhey there
thanks so much for posting this!
i installed it with no problems.
some things are not showing up on my site though and i'm wondering if it's a module that i need to turn on?
specifically it's the big question up top and the formatting of the page. do i need to be doing something in my CSS to get these things working?
here is my site:
http://homesteadingwtf.com/
thanks

voidfiles commentedBasically, because I figured that big question box would be specific to explain this I made a block, and put that html into it. I also noticed that your main column was really small on your site, is that a bug or have you started to modify the css already?
voidfiles commentedSo I think I zipped up an old version of the theme, if you want to see the latest version of what I am working on I have been using github to store all my changes
http://github.com/voidfiles/explainthis
I have setup the theme as a main folder
Comment #17
ryanishungry commentedhi there
i have not changed the CSS yet, not sure why my main column is so squished.
i will look at the CSS, i just assumed your CSS would override that. maybe not.
i'll grab your newest build as well
thanks so much for your help and for sharing this!

mrmartinblue commentedHey VF,
I couldn't get your template to work but am building a theme from scratch. I'm new to Drupal though and was wondering how the hell you get rid of the all the labels appearing on the lists eg Title: MY TITLE HERE. I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find where those are coming from. I hacked the CSS with a display:none but I figure there's a better way. Could you point me to the files generating this content?
Cheers!
voidfiles commentedCould you post a screen shot? I am not certain what you are refereeing to.
mrmartinblue commentedComment #21
mrmartinblue commentedVoidfiles,
Here's an updated screenshot of what my template looks like so far and what I'm trying to do.
Since you've styled the output already, would you be able to direct me to the files/items that I need to modify to do the same?
This would save me a ton of time.
Thanks!
voidfiles commentedokay I see now, you are seeing title because of the views, you need to tell views to just ouput the title, and not add "title:" before it.
voidfiles commentedOkay, long time, no see. I rolled an arrayshift theme, http://drupal.org/project/as_theme, and I have also updated the installation profile to include this theme. So people should get some kind of experience, that they expect out of the box.
