Hi,

very nice if users can be anonymous, because I like to use it for some Indymedia site. But admins, editors or any optional role should be able to see who is posting. That in case there is abuse or something.

Title: But admin & editors should be able to see poster?! » Admin & editors can see poster? + optional fake username & checking against username base & rules ?

OK! I hadn't installed the module (have 300 modules & still arranging...), but thought it was interesting and didn't see the mentioned feature in the description; would be clarifying for visitors to the project page to add that info.

I downloaded the module now, but will take some time before I can test; site is empty and still working on many other initializing problems.

Considerations:

* If a site allows anonymous posters, there is not that a problem. But due to the enormous spamming on Drupal sites and advantages logged-in users can have, users have a user-name.

* Making the author hidden or "anonymous" is an option. Normally on Indymedia sites, the author can choose any (temporary) name, like "NN" (No Name) "FreeWilly" or whatever.

* Decide using that name sometimes and use another name in between for some other purposes and after some time maybe never use that name again, while always having the same user-name. Suppose it's not already in the module?

* Then more complex: if those 'fake' (user)names can be checked against existing user-names AND modules about user-name rules (like forbidden user-names and sequences in user-names) ?

* Maybe also the right (only optional, not obliged) to claim one or two fake user names. And maybe some names everyone can use and can't be claimed by only one user, like NN (No Name)... The last one is not that important (programming costs time..!), as there already is "Anonymous" or sometimes a renamed version of that user-role.

I uses the word user-nameS for the same user, but in fact I meant different screen-names. There is a module for user 1 to do so, in order to make it more difficult to enter that user account. I'm not sure if this Hidden Author module is the place for these features? Anyway, a module "screen-name" that covers all these features together, seems to lack..?

Then I see that there is an option in .../user/xxx/edit to change ones user-name, if that user-role has the permission set for that option in the user module...

I would be interested in implementing a fake username, but without any further requirements (i.e. duplicates would be allowed).
This means: instead of a fixed anonymous user, with a fixed anonymous username, the user would be able to enter a fake name on a per post basis. The post would show the fake name, underlying userid would still be the fixed anonymous user id, and no link to profile would be shown.

ClearXS, would that solve your problem?
