Select uberimage using OG group context

Any thoughts on the following coding problem?

I've been using the uberimage module (excellent work!) and have adapted it to 'per OG group' OR 'per user' image galleries. I've done this by checking for current OG group context, and if available use that, otherwise use the user id.

Most of the action goes on inside the function "aef_image_creator_process". It seems to be working quite nicely EXCEPT for the following case:

whilst editing a group node with the cck uberimage field 'my_uberimage' already set on entry, I click [X] to remove the reference. When the ajax/ahah calls the function "aef_image_creator_process" again then the OG group context is not available, and my logic breaks. How can I keep hold of the id I have on 1st entry?

I don't quite get how the AHAH is working, so I'm not sure how to keep hold of the group id.

Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you think I am going about this in the wrong way?
