To recreate:

  1. Click "Search" in the top bar -- the search field will appear over the regular menu items (Content, Structure, etc.)
  2. Click "Search" in the top bar again -- the search field will disappear, but the regular menu will now be gone unless the page is refreshed

ugh... nevermind. I just realized the top menu works like tabs. Never used anything in that top bar before. Sorry
