the menu works great until on random pages, usually admin and/or edit, it is visable and clickable but doesn't drop down. also sometimes the icon task (run cron, run update, etc.) menu does not drop down even though all others do

If the menu is visible then it sounds like an Issue with Drupal Administration Menu not Admin Menu Dropdown.

a) Which browser are you using?

b) Which other modules are enabled - and - does this problem go away if you disable them?
