Using the AT Theme Generator for 8.x, I find that the edit tabs for the My Account page do not show up. They show up if I change to another theme, just not on the one created by the Theme Generator.

Would you have any idea where else I could look to find the problem? I have spend hours trying to see if a particular setting is preventing it and can't find the reason.

They're a block, did you change the block visibility configuration, such as hiding them for user*

I know that there is a block for the user menu and that works fine. There is also a block for tabs, but the my account page is not listed on it as a content type. I have checked all the permissions and have no user restrictions in that sense. I wish there was just a edit button on the /user/username page that would open it up for edit, but haven't found a way to do that.

Ok, I got to playing around with the tabs block and as you suggested - it was a matter of moving the tabs block to the main content region and restricting it to /users* . I didn't need it on the other pages as I use the built in quick edit.
