So, what are the very best Drupal examples..

(and no posting your own site)

Mine would have to be:

What if your own site is the best example you know of? :)

Seriously though, I have always liked http://www.urlgreyhot.com/ I assume it is run on Drupal because I have seen the author posting here and creating modules/themes.

What module are you using fot the right sidebar, to add the commersial adds?

chrisada’s picture

Of course it is running Drupal, look at the URI. :)

Actually http://terminus1525.ca is the most impressive I have ever seen, but it must have been a heavily-hacked Drupal they are running there, so urlgreyhot got my vote.

walkah’s picture

the most recent version of terminus is /almost/ vanilla 4.4.x . there are (obviously) some custom modules, but the bulk of the customization is in the terminus.theme (which is a slim 1698 lines of code ;) )

wow. drupal continues to amaze me.

geoline’s picture

wow terminus1525.ca really is a nice drupal example

cel4145’s picture

both terminus and urlgreyhot demonstrate a lot of Drupal potential. and here's another site with a nice design: cialog.

mattmm’s picture

I want this theme!

Check out WoobleLab: Online Community for New Media Artists. Just saw it a few days ago. It looks very Drupal like, yet, aesthetically pleasing.

pmentzer’s picture

Thanks for the vote cel4145! It's nice to get some positive feedback after just launching. I just added a video (mpg) tutorial to the WoobleLab site today...trying to get more of that "immersive" feel over time. But, I have to say, I'd vote for the terminus folks...that site is REALLY nice. Speaking of which, I like the flash integration on the home page that they've got...I tried that in the "mission" area but no luck...more to figure out how to do!

You can check out http://www.zofiart.com.

My client is still trying to figure out what should go on the front page, and the site will obviously have more text content, but the galleries are cool, and you wouldn't know immediately that it is Drupal (except for the urls, which I left in the default style). Please make comments for improvement so that we can fix it up nicely.

joe@www.joepilot.net’s picture

I must say that's probably the coolest looking Drupal based site out there. I also like http://www.nautis.com/, it's a neat design and really clean.

Donovan’s picture

I second that! Several of the other sites are very striking and demonstrate some truly neat examples of what can be done with Drupal.

However, nautis.com just pulls everything together into an original and visually appealing package, with a very elegant character and overall "feel."

gee, thanks for the compliments...but we should really be thanking the drupal developers and support community, as it's drupal that allows us to create such sites. so, thanks drupal!

to answer a couple of questions...all of our sites are drupal based and our themes don't really start from another theme. marieke, the floatleft designer, creates a mockup of the visual design, and then i implement it into a theme - typically starting with the code from theme.inc (theme_page, theme_node, etc...) and manually building the css.

you're right that the actual themes aren't available to the public, as they are custom designs for our clients. but if anyone has any questions on how we've done something on a particular site, let me know (http://drupal.org/user/5253/contact). i'd be happy to share ideas and code.

Of course, just like any other framework lots are great. Just the majority of Drupal sites that I have seen are not very polished in presentation. Usually due to 'lazy' theming and not taking the extra time to create image inputs, things like that

Can we create similar sites by customizing themes only?
or/and we also need to customizing modules and creating custom codes
in order to do that?

I have created two drupal based web sites by modifying themes, XHTML and CSS
to create some unconventional layout,
but hardly achieve what your example is.

I realy like your work.

tjholowaychuk’s picture

Thank you. Unfortunately the 'green' promo is ruining the site haha... their contracted a seperate company for those however. Hours I cant really say, probably a good 30 - 40 hours tweaking CSS/Design elements. It is a hybrid of internal intranet data pushed to this site, and then of course Drupal nodes. The entire site took around 140 - 150 hours, still some fixing up to do though.

I know it's not fair to promote your own site. But since philipk started his inconsistency from the very beginning:), I'd like to show you a very gorgeous sample of newspaper site. The great thing is it is totally unfinished, it's just a rejected sample site, haha, it will simply remain there for the proof of concept on skinning some great modules, and most of all it's all based on zen_classic. I have made other better sites, of course, but as said earlier it's just unfair to promote your own site, right?
