Come together with the global Drupal community in Rotterdam, 28 Sept – 1 Oct 2026. Sessions, contribution, connection, and Early Bird savings until 8 June.
In the readme.txt it only talks about multigroup like so "The Multigroup group treats all included fields like a single field, keeping the related delta values of all included fields synchronized."
So in my understanding, while it does not say, a standard group is just a visual arrangement, while a multigroup is data level synchronization as well.
Information about what a field group is can be found in several places. Please, see resources section in project page, also install advanced_help module, if you haven't already.
