The current situation is:

With TinyMCE 2 you get the teaser break but but not the image assist button.

With TinyMCE 3 you get the image assist button but not the teaser break.

What do I need to do to get both? Do I really have to downgrade Wysiwyga nd Image Assist to the old versions where this stuff worked?

I think you are referring to the "teaser splitter", i.e. "split summary button". With TinyMCE 3 and Wysiwyg 1.x, you can enable the "Teaser break" plugin button instead.
