Finding new posts within a long thread is a difficult thing on the drupal.org forums, but how about placing a "*" (or some other identifier) in front of the new post text i.e. "*new" it would then be much easier to do a local search (apple F on a mac not sure for a PC) to find new posts....

If I'm not mistaken, when you click on recent posts, it should list posts that you have not read. It also marks the new one.

But...
If you look at a thread with a large number of "nested replies" its very difficult to find the new comments.... Take this thread for instance:
http://drupal.org/node/14563
which I hadn't looked for a while - there were new comments all over the place & it takes ages to try & track them down.

agreed
That's one reason why a bridge solution (non intergrated) to forums such as phpbb/smf/etc. should be made available so we all have a CHOICE and not stuck using something that may not be as feature rich.

comment viewing options
I've wondered why we have the comment viewing options turned off? That allows a user to reorganize the posts with the most recent first. Here's an example post on one of my sites which uses it.
But then when you turn off comment viewing
you lose the context of the post, which I find really useful... Another solution could be a mini menu with anchor point links: #new1, #new2, #new3 etc. you could then navigate to the new posts.
