I added fields and a group to a content type, but when I click the configure link next each of them, I see no way to group any of the fields into the group or create fields within the group . Please help. Thank you.

On the manage fields screen for CCK 2.1 Grouping is achieved by dragging the fields around.

Click and hold on the multi-direction arrow to the left of the field and drag the field under the Group.

Once you have the field under the group, drag the field to the right. It should be indented under the group.

Click save and you should be done.
