| dww | My best friend since 3rd grade (!) and his wife came to visit, which was great. We almost threw a party on New Years Eve, but I came down with something (not COVID this time, but I was sick enough to postpone). Still congested, but finally improving.Just before that, we were taken on an exclusive / semi-private tour of the inside of the Keck Observatory at the top of Mauna Kea. Both my friend + his wife work for LIGO, and my neighbor's nephew works at Keck, and everything worked out just right for the tour to happen. We got to take a "$135 million selfie" on the primary mirror array that they had swung around to be directly across from where we were standing during part of the tour. :nerd_face: It was a super amazing nerd-out experience all around.We reflected that the site is both profoundly sacred to the Kanaka Maoli (indigenous Hawaiian people), and to the global astronomy community (and beyond). It really was like being inside a temple, one that was built without permission, but a temple nonetheless. It was also a fascinating juxtaposition of intense natural beauty and wildly complex scientific beauty. |
