Hello and welcome to this asynchronous, biweekly Slack meeting for the Contribution Events Initiative! :wave:

This meeting:
➤ Is for Drupal community members interested in how to better organize, promote, and improve contribution events. We discuss upcoming events, lessons learned from past events, ideas for increasing event participation, how to improve documentation, and more.
➤ Happens every two weeks in alternating timezones: 5pm UTC Mondays and 5am UTC Tuesdays.
➤ Is done over chat.
➤ Is actively facilitated for 1 hour, but is open asynchronously for 24 hours from the meeting start time.
➤ Happens in threads, which you can follow to be notified of new replies even if you don’t comment in the thread. You may also join the meeting later and participate asynchronously!

Kristen Pol (she/her)	Not a public/open thing but I've been mentoring the DPC dev team to do their own internal weekly "bug smash" type events https://www.dpc.sa.gov.au/
Kristen Pol (she/her)	And also have been leading an effort to help port projects from Drupal 9 to Drupal 10 that the GovCMS platform relies upon https://www.govcms.gov.au/
Kristen Pol (she/her)	For the DPC team, they are hoping to focus part of their time on porting projects from D9 to D10 that the SDP platform relies upon https://www.vic.gov.au/single-digital-presence

4️⃣ Are you looking for a contribution event to help as an organizer, mentor, or participant? Or are you an event organizer that doesn’t have contribution activities yet and would like help?

gusaus	@liberatr (he/him) @hestenet (he/him) I'm trying to visualize the format, but I'm wondering if a series of contribution events would help get more folks involved with the Funding module and related work that's been ramping up in the #funding channel. :thinking_face:
gusaus	Related to that could be #sustaindrupal contribution events where we we'd help projects and initiatives identify needs and help match them to resources.
hestenet (he/him)	It's a good question - the timing would be key
hestenet (he/him)	Like - do we do an event when we have a beta? Do we do one when we have an initial D.O deployment of the tool to get maintainers onboard? Something else?
liberatr (he/him)	Would certainly like a few more features under the belt to give folks something solid.
gusaus	Agreed regarding timing/status of the Funding module - we can continue discussing in #funding and mention in a future meeting when we're at a point to plan something.
gusaus	contribution events where we we'd help projects and initiatives identify needs and help match them to resources.This isn't dependent on a beta release of Funding module (or all the people working on it).Again, I'm not sure what in-person events would look like, but we could/should coordinate virtual ones as soon as a few more interested folks join #sustaindrupal
gambry	I suggested a couple of enhancements for this year’s Drupal Global Contribution weekend. See this thread. I don’t see any mentions on #mentoring channel yet, where usually the conversations started for previous years. Maybe it’s the time to move the coordination for the event on this (#contribution-events) group?
Kristen Pol (she/her)	I'm not familiar with how the Global Contribution Weekend gets organized but I see that @nedjo @bojhan are shown as group organizers on the group page so pinging them here to see if they have thoughts on where/how to organize the 2023 event
gusaus	Wonder if there's been any discussion or planning in #event-organizers?
gambry	@gusaus @Kristen Pol (she/her) historically that got organised in #mentoring. But with “organised” I meant we coordinated the logo and the copy for the landing page, and then local organizers do all the hard work autonomously.The progress we made with d.org community events and #contribution-events channels has been wonderful, and probably we should migrate all organisations in here.I’ve been among the organisers for a few years in a row, together with @John Cook and @Meike and a few more.
gusaus	Just wondering if that's also something EOWG helps coordinate.
gambry	Same as above, in the years when I organised it I don’t remember anyone from EOWG. And I skipped the organisation only for 2022 event.
gambry	I’ll focus on the Porting day, for now, so we can buy time to ping all these groups and find out who likes to be involved. From the community PoV, Global Contribution Weekend is an appointment most local meetups know and long for.
Kristen Pol (she/her)	Would be good to understand how we can help with supporting the Global Contribution Weekend organizing/etc... just follow a similar structure to porting days? Easy to add more maintainers to the d.o project. I was thinking that having issue templates for such events might be helpful but I have just been copying previous event issues and then changing them when has been working fine
gambry	@Kristen Pol (she/her) let’s get the porting day out and we can start the work for Global Contribution Weekend.TBH the work should be way less, since the organisation is delegated to local organiser. The global organisation will be around promotion and - due limitations on d.org - for community event landing page owner to update it with new locations.
Kristen Pol (she/her)	Right… that’s assuming we don’t do a global remote event as part of it as well which would be nice to have for those who can’t do in person but I’ll be traveling in December and early January so I wouldn’t even have the bandwidth to help with that
gambry	@Kristen Pol (she/her) usually there are one of two virtual events. Even though they are often localised, people are invited to talks in #contribute and #global-contribution-weekend.So we may not strictly require a global virtual event. But let’s discuss this in few weeks.

We need promotion for recruiting mentors AND general attendance.I’ve been reposting all “Drupal 10 will be released soon” messages I see in socials, suggesting to join the event and use it as a dojo for skilling up on Drupal 9 -> 10 upgrades.

gusaus	Would be good to hear from the organizers and other active folks in this channel. To me it seems like there's enough overlap to consolidate these efforts and reduce fragmentation and duplication.

froboy	I commented there. Happy to help with whatever… I think we’re open to whatever makes sense from your side, I just got the impression that it wasn’t desired based on prior conversations. If something’s changed we’re here for you.
froboy	Just to set expectations, I’ve personally been a little overwhelmed at the conversations going on around this and haven’t had the bandwidth to feel like I have a handle on things. I’d be happy to have a more synchronous discussion some time, whether at an EOWG meeting or maybe better a separate time to specifically hash the Contrib/EOWG relationship out.
gusaus	Actually if we separate out the discussions around sustaining and the larger initiative (which we've now done), there's relatively little activity between (and even during) these meetings.
gusaus	Also - when @Kristen Pol (she/her) took the initiative to start it up :raised_hands:, there wasn't the same EOWG presence (at least in this Slack) as there is now.
leslieg	I would like to continue the discussion between the two initiatives as well and agree with @froboy that a synchronous discussion may be most helpful at this point along with sharing of the discussion in the ticket and channel. Thanks for all your efforts of the initiative to date. Lot of progress.
gusaus	Considering #5 on the agenda, I think there's an opportunity for some synchronous discussion if a few of the Contribution Events maintainers were able to participate.
gusaus	Just skimmed through the meeting log and realized the agenda item :point_up: was to discuss actual contribution events - which... after moving Open Collective discussions/collaboration into #sustaindrupal... is pretty much the singular purpose of this initiative and channel.
gusaus	Seems like contribution events overlap or are directly related to what's being discussed here. (edited)

While creating the collective came out of discussions in the channel (and related issues), the Drupal Contribution initiative is focusing on the community and project as a whole... where 'Events' is just one contribution area.That said, we really need buy in and involvement from a much larger group of folks and orgs.

Ok - well aware there are multiple agenda items and conversations about this... but I just wanted to comment about something I thought of while walking this morning........which actually relates to what I previously said about this initiative being just one small part of the larger Drupal Contribution initiative.Meaning active leads like @Kristen Pol (she/her) and @surabhi.gokte should be part of the team on https://opencollective.com/drupal-contributionThat does NOT mean y'all are responsible for doing anything outside of what you're already doing with this events initiative.I mean we still need help finalizing the copy we'll put on the collective - but really that's a writing task which could be taken on by someone in #documentationBut that's it - there's really nothing else to do at this point... except for joining the collective so to represent this awesome initiative :raised_hands:I'm saying there's nothing else that's a burning priority because the collective itself already has events functionality. We haven't enabled yet, but Mautic provides a great example of how to do it right https://opencollective.com/mautic/eventsSo think about it - the collective is called Drupal Contribution - that name makes it pretty obvious to folks what any events are about.We're already set up to take on sponsors and donors for Drupal Contribution Events on that collective.The best way to learn about how it all works might be to just fire up a few contribution events focusing on priority projects, goals, and tasks :clapper:
