Meeting will happen in #contribution-events on drupal.slack.com.

Hello and welcome to this asynchronous, biweekly Slack meeting for the Contribution Events Initiative!

This meeting:
➤ Is for Drupal community members interested in how to better organize, promote, and improve contribution events. We discuss upcoming events, lessons learned from past events, ideas for increasing event participation, how to improve documentation, and more.
➤ Happens every two weeks in alternating timezones: 5pm UTC Mondays and 5am UTC Tuesdays.
➤ Is done over chat.
➤ Is actively facilitated for 1 hour, but is open asynchronously for 24 hours from the meeting start time.
➤ Happens in threads, which you can follow to be notified of new replies even if you don’t comment in the thread. You may also join the meeting later and participate asynchronously!
➤ Transcript will be exported and posted to a project issue for this meeting. For anonymous comments, start with a :bust_in_silhouette: emoji. To take a comment or thread off the record, start with a :no_entry_sign: emoji.

This meeting is run alternately by @Kristen Pol (she/her) and @surabhi.gokte. This week I am facilitating.

:zero: Who is here today? Comment in the thread to introduce yourself and let us know [insert social question, e.g. if you have any interesting plans for the weekend, what is a recent book/movie/series you enjoyed, what is a new song you like, have any fun vacation plans].
:one: Do you have suggested topics you are looking to discuss? Post in this thread and we’ll open separate threads for them as appropriate. Please use the additional threads for discussion.
:two: Are there any contribution events coming up that you know about? Regular events?
:three: Did you participate in a contribution event recently? Feedback?
:four: Are you looking for a contribution event to help as an organizer, mentor, or participant? Or are you an event organizer that doesn't have contribution activities yet and would like help?
:five: Do you have any resources or documentation suggestions? Do you have suggestions for where to look for existing documentation (even outside of Drupal)?

[add additional topic threads here]

:last: That's all folks, thank you for attending! :blue_heart: This meeting is officially open for the next 23 hours, so please continue the conversation in the threads above. We also welcome feedback on the meeting structure and agenda via this thread, Slack, or issue queue!
  • For #1, don't copy/paste the topics exactly unless they are clear and short enough. Otherwise, summarize the information so it's easy to understand. Then start each of those topic threads with the first item acknowledging the person who suggested the topic, e.g. [@ name] raised this. Or you can put in the thread message if preferred.

  • For #2, add this for first item in the thread:

In addition to adding events here, use this issue to add new events and encourage organizers to add these to the Community Events list as well: https://www.drupal.org/project/contribution_events/issues/3281974

  • For #3, add this for first item in the thread:

In addition to adding feedback here, use this issue or create a child issue to add any contribution event feedback:
    https://www.drupal.org/project/contribution_events/issues/3282885

  • For #4, add this for first item in the thread:

In addition to adding your interest here, use this page to signify your willingness to help at contribution events: https://www.drupal.org/community-initiatives/contribution-events-initiat...

  • For #5, add these for first items in the thread:

In addition to adding your resources here, use this issue to note any resources and documentation that might be helpful for contribution events or places we could look (even outside of Drupal): https://www.drupal.org/project/contribution_events/issues/3280005

  • After #5, review the open project issues to see if there are any topics that should be added for this particular meeting and open numbered threads as appropriate.

:zero: Who is here today? Comment in the thread to introduce yourself!Icebreaker: If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

smustgrave Hello names Stephen. Been finding myself with free time between projects and been meaning to get more involved in Drupal core:wave:2
Kristen Pol (she/her) Kristen, California. My practical superpower would be to be able to keep my house/computer/whatever clean and organized  A more fun superpower would be traveling anywhere in a blink of an eye because I love to travel and haven’t in nearly 3 years:wave:1
surabhi.gokte Surabhi, from India :wave:If I could choose one superpower for myself (though I would love to have many more ) it would be to be able to fly quickly from one place to another so that I could attend all the Drupal events :drupaleurope-heart: :wave:1
surabhi.gokte @Kristen Pol (she/her) same same :hi5:
Kristen Pol (she/her) Oh! I would choose a better superpower... ability to wipe out pandemics! Then I could travel and I wouldn’t care if it were by plane/train/automobile
surabhi.gokte That would be the best thing! :sunglasses:
leslieg Late again, just hopping in to catch up on the threads. My superpower would be to fly quickly and safely from one place to another so that I could attend all the Drupal events and visit family.:wave:2
surabhi.gokte @leslieg same same for us as well  :hi5:
Gábor Hojtsy (he/him) Gábor from Hungary, would love to be at multiple places at once. Lots of things I could do :wave:2
surabhi.gokte @Gábor Hojtsy (he/him) True that :hi5:
Tinto Thijs from the Netherlands  Superpower: speak/understand all languages :world_map::wave:2
quietone Hi:wave:2
Asish Sajeev Asish, From India. I choose Super Speed. (edited) :wave:2
AmyJune (volkswagenchick) AmyJune in California, USA. I would love to see all the ingredients in food. I am mostly lurking today to keep up with all the things:wave:2
Kristen Pol (she/her) I’d be afraid to see all the ingredients :lolsob:2:laughing:2
gusaus Hi - Gus Austin originally from Boston (suburbs of Medfield and Dedham) - been long visiting/evaluating Portland OR after residing in LA/West Hollywood, and Seattle. Not sure about superpowers, but this group (and probably most community run projects and initiatives) really needs non-coding contributors (all sorts of roles) in a big way. Can’t think of a better opportunity for new folks coming into the community. Learn by collaborating with experienced/known contributors. That can be an entry point to a long, fun, fulfilling career in open source.Sorry for the long intro. I’m sort of in that mode talking to multiple open source communities in Open Collective’s Slack.:wave:2:heavy_plus_sign:1
surabhi.gokte Absolutely agree @gusaus, ++1
surabhi.gokte I can talk a lot about non code contribution and making career out of it.. maybe someday I’ll submit a talk around this too!:yes:1:+1:1:raised_hands:1
gusaus If we can gather up a few non-coders with availability to revive #drupal-dojo (which in my day :old-man-yells-at-old-man: was the best place to learn, connect, and teach). Seems like the Open Social platform (does or could have all the functionality built in where people could manage that group and fire up impromptu Dojo sessions quite easily).

1️⃣ Do you have suggested topics you are looking to discuss? Post in this thread and we'll open separate threads for them as appropriate. Please use the additional threads for discussion.

smustgrave How to best address old tickets.  Especially the 8+ year ones.  This persons comment kinda makes it sound like he’s lost faith in the community.  Not sure if thats the feeling for others who have old tickets open.#3185775: Place Views preview on the side on large monitors#comment-14609912:heavy_check_mark:1

2️⃣ Are there any contribution events coming up that you know about? Regular events?

Kristen Pol (she/her) In addition to adding events here, use this issue to add new events and encourage organizers to add these to the Community Events list as well: [#3281974]Drupal.org2022 Drupal contribution eventsProblem/Motivation Right now it's not easy to find upcoming contribution events so use this as a temporary place to document them until we have good documentation in place for advertising these.May 24th
Kristen Pol (she/her) We need to update the porting event.. I'll do that
Kristen Pol (she/her) https://www.drupal.org/community/events/drupal-10-global-porting-day-jul... 10 Global Porting Day July 2022IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT TIME ZONES The above dates/times do not show up correctly in some cases (e.g. if anonymous). surabhi.gokte Yes, we need to add more details to the different roles as well. For now we just have mentor sign up sheet.. we should be able to collect other info as well I think like who is organising where
leslieg I liked how DrupalCamp Colorado had their contribution day listed on the community/events page under Contribution Events. Looks like it was removed though so maybe that is no longer happening. Will check with the organizers
Kristen Pol (she/her) I had been adding contribution events for camps myself that said there was going to be contribution since, for now, that has to be a separate event but sadly I only did that for June events and then haven't gotten back to it
AmyJune (volkswagenchick) I am going to Colorado and giving a talk before contrib day on issue triage, so i believe there is still a contrib day…:+1:1

3️⃣ Did you participate in a contribution event recently? Feedback?

Kristen Pol (she/her) In addition to adding feedback here, use this issue or create a child issue to add any contribution event feedback: [#3282885]Drupal.orgMETA: 2022 Drupal contribution events feedbackProblem/Motivation/Idea It would be good to get feedback from contribution events on an ongoing basis to help us improve upon events in the future. What went well? What resources were helpful? What could have went better? Any suggestions for the next event? Proposed resolution Use this general issue or clone this issue to create a child issue for collecting any feedback related to contribution events in 2022. Remaining tasks Collect feedback in this ticket or in new child issues Create followup issues as neededMay 29th

4️⃣ Are you looking for a contribution event to help as an organizer, mentor, or participant? Or are you an event organizer that doesn't have contribution activities yet and would like help?

smustgrave Think maybe an event where people can get together and just do reviews? Seems to be alot in the queue.  I try posting in the bugsmash channel a list and started yesterday offering to review others.  May help keep issues from getting stuck:+1:2
Kristen Pol (she/her) I like this idea ^

Kristen Pol (she/her) @surabhi.gokte and I are organizing and mentoring at the upcoming Drupal 10 porting event: https://www.drupal.org/community/events/drupal-10-global-porting-day-jul...
leslieg At the current time I am very focused on the Project Browser Strategic Initiative and will not be able to help out at the Drupal 10 porting event.. I will continue to mentor as folks express an interest in the PB initiative and will be mentoring at DrupalCon Prague on Project Browser. I am always looking for folks who would like to contribute to the initiative - designers and site builders welcome.:+1:3

5️⃣ Do you have any resources or documentation suggestions? Do you have suggestions for where to look for existing documentation (even outside of Drupal)?

Kristen Pol (she/her) In addition to adding your resources here, use this issue to note any resources and documentation that might be helpful for contribution events or places we could look (even outside of Drupal): [#3280005]Drupal.orgMETA: Gather documentation and resources for contribution event organizationProblem/Motivation To help encourage more contribution events, we should find existing and create new documentation and resources for how to plan, organize, run, and market contribution events of various types. Proposed resolution Look for existing documentation and resources and figure out what gaps there are.May 12th
Kristen Pol (she/her) @benjifisher has kindly created this https://www.drupal.org/community-initiatives/contribution-events-initiat...…]nt-guide/testing-compatibility-patches-with-composer-and-ddevDrupal.orgTesting compatibility patches with Composer and DDevPrerequisites Git PHP/Composer DDev Account on drupal.org These instructions were tested with DDev. They should mostly work with other setups if you replace ddev composer and ddev drush with the appropriate commands. If you have DDev but not PHP/Composer, then the only part you need to change are the first three steps under "Set up a local Drupal 10 site". Getting started Set up a local Drupal 10 site.Jul 16th:wave:1
Kristen Pol (she/her) We will likely need more documentation prior to the upcoming Drupal 10 porting event that can be documented here: https://www.drupal.org/community-initiatives/contribution-events-initiat... 10 porting event guideTBD - this will be filled in over the next few weeksJul 6th

6️⃣ raised by @smustgrave - How to best address old tickets.  Especially the 8+ year ones.

surabhi.gokte Additional comment on this by @smustgrave: This persons comment kinda makes it sound like he’s lost faith in the community.  Not sure if thats the feeling for others who have old tickets open.#3185775: Place Views preview on the side on large monitors#comment-14609912Drupal.orgPlace Views preview on the side on large monitorsMotivation HD monitors are widely adopted even on the smallest laptops and it is not uncommon for site builders to useeven higher resolutions for the past decade or so, since 27" displays are more affordable than ever. Please see attached video (9mb, 15sec). User interface changes Views edit pages will be affected.Dec 1st, 2020
Kristen Pol (she/her) When there are so many issues 21969, things are going to get lost/dropped/ignored. It's unfortunate but a reality. Bugsmash is doing an amazing job of tackling bugs. That issue is a feature request so even less likely to get eyes on it
Kristen Pol (she/her) I like this idea: https://drupal.slack.com/archives/C03FH8GTB1A/p1658163981373459?thread_t... maybe an event where people can get together and just do reviews? Seems to be alot in the queue.  I try posting in the bugsmash channel a list and started yesterday offering to review others.  May help keep issues from getting stuckFrom a thread in contribution-events | Jul 18th | View reply
Kristen Pol (she/her) If someone wanted to try, a companion initiative could be on non-bugs (we discussed this briefly in bugsmash)
Kristen Pol (she/her) Personally, I focus on reviews/testing so an event revolving on that is appealing
smustgrave fully get it just trying to think of way to make it so people don’t think they were ignored.  maybe another event idea is to review ticket at the very end of the queue:+1:1
Kristen Pol (she/her) right, things that haven't been commented on for a long time
smustgrave even if no work gets done on them just acknowledging that it’s still an issue or putting it in a new category like postponed needs more detail could I think help
smustgrave maybe could be a sub initiative of the bugsmash
Kristen Pol (she/her) the Review Squad
smustgrave Something like that haha.  Even in the needs review queue I see there tickets been there for years
Kristen Pol (she/her) sadly not surprised
smustgrave No ones fault but if we had an ability to keep cleaner issue queue may help bring focus to actual issues.  Little backlog grooming
smustgrave And I’m willing to help.  Just may not be the best at being able to look at an issue and tell if its still an issue
Kristen Pol (she/her) A regular review event that happens monthly perhaps would be interesting but someone needs to facilitate it and there are timezone issues since it would probably be hard to have it as a 24 mentored event once a month... not sure
Kristen Pol (she/her) Unless it's like this meeting where we alternate time zones every other event
smustgrave Would say whatever is easier and get the most involvement.  Not sure if it would be one event or two.Review “In Review” tickets to keep them movingReview tickets at the end of the queue
Kristen Pol (she/her) We should add it to this initiative's issue queue as an idea so we don't lose it... I'll add soon:+1:1
quietone Instead of a 'Review Squad', I suggest a 'Triage Squad', one that does not do bugs since there is already the Bug Smash Initiative.:+1:1
quietone And from what I learned in Bug Smash, the group should discuss how to triage the different cases. For example, the process to evaluate a stale feature request probably should be different from the process for a task. For example a feature request may be a step to specifically get feedback from UX folks.:+1:1
quietone And 'testing' issues would be another case. (edited) :+1:1

surabhi.gokte Official hashtag should be #Drupal10Porting?
surabhi.gokte Need to update the documentation guide as well - https://www.drupal.org/community-initiatives/contribution-events-initiat...
Kristen Pol (she/her) Hashtag for Twitter? We need an issue tag as well... I'll see what was used for the previous events
Kristen Pol (she/her) Screen Shot 2022-07-18 at 10.27.01 AM.png
Kristen Pol (she/her) There were 2 events "Drupal 9 porting day" and "Drupal 9 porting weekend". Given that we may want to have several porting days over 2022, then let me think how we should tag
surabhi.gokte Yes, for both social media and issue tagging actually..Can we not use single hashtag for all event we do do which are D10 porting related?
Kristen Pol (she/her) Yeah, perhaps simpler and less error prone to just use one tag for all:heavy_plus_sign:1
Kristen Pol (she/her) Let me see what other tags are related to Drupal 10
surabhi.gokte Sure :+1:
Kristen Pol (she/her) fortunately, not muchScreen Shot 2022-07-18 at 10.32.21 AM.png
Kristen Pol (she/her) so perhaps "Drupal 10 porting day" or "Drupal 10 porting days" for the issue tag...
surabhi.gokte "Drupal 10 porting day" sounds good to me (edited) :heavy_plus_sign:1
Kristen Pol (she/her) then, for Twitter, either #Drupal10Porting or #Drupal10PortingDay
Kristen Pol (she/her) okay, we'll stick with singular which matches the Drupal 9 event so that's tidy:cool:1
surabhi.gokte #Drupal10PortingDay - to avoid confusion :slightly_smiling_face:
Kristen Pol (she/her) sounds good!
Kristen Pol (she/her) consistency, I like it:heavy_plus_sign:1
surabhi.gokte Will you update it on the events page?
Kristen Pol (she/her) sure, I can do that:cool:1
Kristen Pol (she/her) This is an interesting thread to incorporate into the documentation for the porting event: https://drupal.slack.com/archives/C014CT1CN1M/p1657887557543819Dieter HolvoetNot sure if this has been asked before but couldn’t really find an answer, so here goes: in what situations should module maintainers create a new major version of their module when updating for Drupal 10 compatibility? Is there room for interpretation or is the spec very clear on this? Here’s my understanding after reading some comments on Slack, does this sound right?when only adding support for a new major Drupal version and doing backwards incompatible changes to code => create a new major version of the modulewhen dropping support for a major Drupal version => create a new major version of the moduleShow moreThread in d10readiness | Jul 15th | View message
surabhi.gokte Oh yes, this would be helpful to many it seems
Gábor Hojtsy (he/him) “Drupal 10 porting day” and #Drupal10PortingDay sounds good to me :slightly_smiling_face: Also make sure the regular “Drupal 10 compatibility” tag gets applied to issues :slightly_smiling_face::+1:2
Kristen Pol (she/her) Right... since we probably will mostly be using the bot issues then I assume that tag is already there:heavy_check_mark:1
Kristen Pol (she/her) but that's a good point... I'll update the docs
