See this https://git.drupalcode.org/project/api as reference to see the "logo.png" used as avatar.

Proposed resolution

Add the logo to the repo and the logo will be shown.

Good logo! If there are implementation issues, they won't be disruptive and we can't spot them until it's merged to 1.0.x anyway. Lets commit this and if something needs changing we'll do it in another issue.
