Your response will help shape the future of the Drupal business ecosystem.Views Sort Expression has been automatically opened to new maintainer applications, as it has releases for Drupal 8 which will be marked unsupported on 2 Nov, 2021, but no release yet for Drupal 9. Your Drupal 7 releases will not be affected.
This is an adaptation of our existing process for transferring project maintainership.
After the standard 14-day waiting period from this issue being opened, and if an existing maintainer has not closed it, this project becomes eligible for new maintainers. Those new maintainers will not need to wait for existing maintainer approval.
Next steps:
- An existing maintainer may close this issue and opt out of this accelerated process.
- A prospective new maintainer can take this issue after the 14 day window has elapsed and take the following steps to be added as a maintainer:
- Comment here explaining why you would like to maintain the module.
- If the project is opted in to security coverage, confirm that you have previously received security coverage opt-in permission.
- If an existing maintainer has not commented, move the issue to the Drupal.org Project Ownership queue, by editing the “Project” field on this issue.
- The Drupal.org site moderators will review the issue, and if it meets the requirements can grant you maintainer access.

avpadernoDrupal.org site moderators only add as maintainers/co-maintainers users who have the vetted role, as stable releases for this project are covered by the security advisory policy.
mikeohara doesn't have the necessary role. I am moving back the issue to the project queue, so users with the required roles can be added as maintainers.

hanoiiI am the owner of the module. I am fine with the new maintainer, for some reason I missed this issue. I assume I don't longer need to be contacted prior to this happen?

mikeohara@hanoii it was assumed that the project was unmaintained so this initiative per the issue description was to encourage projects to get picked up and updated. Especially with D9.
The issue was opened originally Sept 20th, which ideally would have given enough time for project owners and maintainers to step up and either pass the torch or affirm their activity on the project.
In normal circumstances, the owner or other maintainers would still need to designate additional maintainers. This is unique to projects that appeared to be unmaintained during the D9 transition.

avpadernoYes, this is a procedure followed for those projects that have a Drupal 8 release, but no release for Drupal 9. It's not the normal procedure followed to add maintainers to a project and it won't be generally be used for every project.
That's why the issue has been automatically created using the System Message account. If an identical issue would be created by a regular user (as it happened in a case), it would be closed as won't fix.
