All chapters of User Guide DE Translation are effected. Examples can be shown on request.

Problem/Motivation

Since I am relativly new to Drupal, I started to read the German version of the user guide to better understand how Drupal works and what the concept behind Drupal is.
I totally value the effort that many people have spent to create the user guide and translate it into different languages.
Nevertheless it is sometimes difficult to understand the German translation caused by typing errors, poor translation (wrong meanings) or the missing of some words. Fortunately my English is good enough so I switch to English in this cases.

Proposed resolution

To give all native German speakers a better experience, I offer my free time to step by step revise all chapters of the User Guide and improve the German version. I am able to spent some hours every week on it, so it still will take some time to be finished.

Please advice me in the best way how to do it. I understand that you use a AsciiDoc source file as a tool.
I would like to understand how you cooperate on this and learn the process so that I don't interfere with other activities.

Dear Friedhelm.

Thank you for your effort.

I like to let the community know, that Friedhelm has done a major overhaul of my work on GitLab. As soon as I'll have some spare time I like to generate a new pdf from that source. Hopefully, that will enable us to check the wording within the guide against the UI of Drupal 9

It has taken over 4 years to get to that point because the guide was mainly translated by 2 people Friedhlem and me.

Steps to final release

  • Build a new pdf from asciidoc source
  • Build the Guides example project from scratch
  • Check all UI strings mentioned in the Guide against the UI of Drupal 9 translated in German
  • Spell checking
  • Commit the work back to Drupal.org

This is exciting news. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you two wrap this up. And, once the updated content is committed I'm happy to help coordinate getting it deployed on drupal.org.

Dear Friedhelm,

I like to let you know that 8 committed your changes from the private Gitlab repository we created over a year, ago now, to Drupal. Org.

I was too busy to do the review until last Thursday.

Big pardon.

Thank you for that great effort.

You Rock!

Hey @Joachim Namyslo, thanks for reviewing and committing these updates. It looks like some changes to the understanding-modules.asciidoc file where intended for the understanding-project.asciidoc file. And, because the ID at the top of the file was change it results in a duplicate ID error when trying to build the content for the guide.

I've reverted the changes to the file in this commit so that we can get it to build. https://git.drupalcode.org/project/user_guide/-/commit/eae5df0d7f0baaa69...

But, if you've got a few minutes to review those changes and see if they should maybe be applied in another way that would be great. If the changes were just an accident and can be ignored feel free to mark this as fixed again. Thanks!

Oh no. OK, I'll take a look. Actually, I wanted to read the built PDF before committing, but I can't get it to compile.

On Ubuntu, some font doesn't seem to exist. So LaTex produces a fancy error, when compiling. However, I need to reproduce the error first.

Let's see if the script works on Fedora without error message. If that works, I'll commit again after the review.

Thanks for the tip.

In the meantime, I'll take care of the translations in the Help Topics module. This thing is great. I like it.

If we didn't have so many tables in the user guide, I'd say let's put the user guide entirely in the Help Topics module. But I'm just dreaming, sorry.

One of those two projects will hopefully be ready When Drupal 10 get's released.

It would be very cool if I could finalize both projects in about 20 days and 7 hrs.
You know what, I'm just going to make a little personal challenge out of it, and then we'll get both projects done in time.

Regarding the reverted change, I have committed the files again after just merging the files using a cp command at the command line, so they should not be mixed again.

Ok here is an update on this issue.

Thanks to Microsoft Edge's text to speech engine and about 16 hours of work I managed to clean the source of the German variant of the user guide from all spelling mistakes and to align the guide with the German translation of the user interface of Drupal. Mainly by listening and reading all chapters of the user guide at the same time.

Since I was able to work very little on the user guide, at least in the last year, there are still a few things to do.

1. find possible changes in the english original and adjust affected areas.

2. finish the translation of the glossary

3. mention people who temporarily helped with proofreading.

4. possibly translate the index.

5. compile it/ check if it can be compiled without errors.

If we have the possibility to bring point 5 forward, I would appreciate it very much. This would be a huge step forward in terms of quality, despite the open points.

Many thanks to the 2 people who have worked on the translation of the, Guida in the past years.

@GenGomez
@M-Schmidt

Without you I would have left my courage somewhere between Asciidoc, DeepL and Duden Mentor. The poor translation of the Drupal user Guide into German is not that poor anymore, I would say.

Thanks for your support.
.
@GenGomez

If you still like to revise the guide again use the repository of this project, please. You can compare the files side by side in Gitlab, if you still like to do so.

Ok, this should be ready now. We have all the changes in the User Guide. I've read through online help and the contents of the Hellp-Topic-Moul, removed spelling mistakes in every single line, and adjusted it if necessary so that it fits with the Übersezungen in the project DE. Now we still need someone to make a review. However, I think the process I went through will pass as a review. I've read the texts line by line enough times for that now.

Tomorrow is Drupal 10-Release-Day. All 3 translated parts of the documentation are ready, as I promised.

@Joachim Namyslo this is great. Thank you for your working completing this!

It sounds to me like maybe we need to do another deployment to get the updated content on Drupal.org?

joachim namyslo’s picture

That is correct. I think it would be good to wait until the Screenshots, are done and the glossary is finished. Otherwise we need to deploy it twice.
