My logs flood with the error:
Undefined property: stdClass::$build_mode in sites/all/modules/cck/modules/fieldgroup/fieldgroup.module on line 409.

That doesn't look anything like the code that is on line 409 in the current code, I wonder if you really have the latest code. There is a new release, try that and see what happens.

Sorry, you are right, I updated the module to check if the error persisted and forgot to update the error message when posting here.

The log message now is:
Undefined property: stdClass::$build_mode in sites/all/modules/cck/modules/fieldgroup/fieldgroup.module on line 523.

The node module adds build_mode to the node before calling the nodeapi hook, so there should be no way that would ever be empty when it gets to this point unless some other module has unset it. Since no one else has reported this error, I suspect you have some custom code or a contrib module interfering here. You'll need to try disabling other modules to see when the error disappears.
