How about stream encryption? This would of course be relevant to all other versions as well.

The problem with the current encryption method is that it is done entirely in memory. This limits the size of backup file that can be encrypted. So typically you can encrypt a DB backup, but the backup of all files (or complete site) will be too big.

The way to overcome this is to encrypt the file as a stream, or in linked chunks. There's an interesting and surprisingly compact example of this technique here.

Any thoughts? I'm happy to have a go at this if there's any interest.
