Just a quick note to acknowledge that today may be extra challenging given some of the news, especially for our US participants. It's okay to step back or take a break if you need it.
Yup, I had to get off twitter. Rabbit hole.
| sparklingrobots | Yup, same! |
:zero: If you’re joining us today, please introduce yourself and share your pronouns. If you’d like, tell us something special you’re doing to take care of yourself these days.
| sparklingrobots | Tara, ABQ, NM, US. Pronouns are she/her or they/them, either is fine. I have been trying to spend as much possible outside, especially when it gets a bit rainy because I love rainstorms in the desert. Also reading a lot of books. :sun_behind_rain_cloud: |
| handels | Hannah (she/her) from Bangkok. I meditate every day so my brain doesn't explode :slightly_smiling_face: |
| sparklingrobots | (if the taking care of yourself question is too hard, that's okay too! :slightly_smiling_face: ) |
| manleywoman | Allison (she/her). Hired a sitter so I could swim laps tonight. |
| krismaye | Kristen in MI (she/her):skin-tone-2: I’ve also started meditating recently and am finding it really helpful! |
| littlekope0903 | Lindsey (She/her) from DC, lurking probably. I take non negotiable time for myself and what I want to do. Usually it's 2 hours every morning. I use that time to pump iron, meditate, and work on non work side projects that make me excited. |
| rubyji | Ruby (she/her) in Durham, NC. Trying to meditate more. Always doing yoga at least once a week.
I would really like to give myself the treat of some vegging in front of the TV but that’s not in the cards right now. |
| starshaped | Aubrey in Boston, she/her, lurking. I take care of myself by drinking copious amounts of tea and knitting all the things. |
| dwells-tn | David, Nashville. He/him. Spending more time talking with people and less time with my headphones on. |
| mdrummond | Marc (he/him) in the Twin Cities, MN. I wish I could say that are good things I’m doing, but quite honestly I play Destiny on my Xbox at night to tune out the world for a little while. There are probably better things I could do, but that’s how I cope. |
| rachel_norfolk | Rachel, UK, long talks with new girlfriend about what makes each of us tick, so we build this relationship on something solid |
| damienmckenna | Damien from Bangor, ME, USA. he/him. Spending time with my brother & sister-in-law who are visiting; going on walks with my wife and talking about where we want to be in a year's time. |
| ekl1773 | Elli, she/her, uhm. Sleeping? talking with friends back home. Walking to a good coffee shop to start the day (I’m currently in Cologne Germany, btw, usually in Washington DC) |
| sparklingrobots | @ekl1773 sleep is 100% a good thing to do for yourself  |
| cleverington | Charles, he/his. Finally managing to join a meeting after a long hiatus! As for taking care? *WAY* too many video games, as of late….. |
| Amelia Rose Khan | My first name is Amelia Rose, they/them. I am focusing more on my personal self and trying to do one fun thing a day which the other day, I made muffins. |
| cboyden | Caroline, she/her. Meditating daily and putting the Good Place premiere on my calendar. |
| unitoch | Paul, he/him. I've just left my position at my company and am taking a break while I look for my next opportunity. I'm looking forward to re-engaging with my hobbies while on my break. |
| kara | Kara, either she or they, the usual .... gaming |
| alexdmccabe | Alex, from Orlando, FL, US. he/him. Playing games, both digital and not. Board game night tonight :game_die: |
| bmanning | Brian (he/him) From Orlando, FL. My family, digital life, games, outdoors, work fam. Looking to build in the community with others. |
| sparklingrobots | I love how many gamers there are in DDI. :ddi: :game_die: :video_game: :ddi: |
| sparklingrobots | welcome @bmanning! Thanks for joining. |
| bmanning | yes! Love the gaming community! Thank you Tara! <3 |
| alexdmccabe | FYI we have <#CAYST5DT8|gaming>! |
0️ *DDI Contrib team monthly meeting on Monday*
<#C76TQUQ2D|ddi-contrib-team> is a DD&I initiative aimed at increasing contribution from under-represented and marginalized individuals in the Drupal community. They’re working on new models of mentorship & support around contribution.
This Monday we're having our monthly meeting to discuss contrib team's next steps. Please join us at 10 am PT on Monday, October 1 in <#C76TQUQ2D|ddi-contrib-team>.
| sparklingrobots | As discussed earlier this week, the sooner we get Gender Field finished, the sooner it can go into d.o and give folks a lot of options for gender data!!   |
| rubyji | I have a standing meeting at that time but I will lurk in Slack. |
| sparklingrobots | Awesome. We could talk about moving that meeting, too--it's not great for me any more either. |
| littlekope0903 | I saw that on twitter and it made me so happy to see :slightly_smiling_face: |
| littlekope0903 | I really would love to contribute to this at some point. My side project has been taking up a lot of my time (in a good way, but I am trying to remember not to take on too much at once...easier said than done) |
| sparklingrobots | It *is* easier said than done...I constantly struggle with overcommitment. :hugs: |
| alexdmccabe | We do need to get moving on a D7 backport. I totally forgot about that |
| alexdmccabe | So, whee, way more work to do than I thought! |
| sparklingrobots | I 100% never thought about it either @alexdmccabe  |
2️ Yesterday the DA announced changes to 's Terms of Service that expands the harassment policy. I wanted to give some space for discussion, questions, etc.
| sparklingrobots | @rachel_norfolk your comment about Swiss cheese is amazing  :skin-tone-3: |
| sparklingrobots | I think it's a great improvement over the previous ToS and am glad to see the DA taking the problem of harassment on d.o seriously. :ddi: |
| littlekope0903 | love this "Unwelcome comments regarding a person’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, drugs, and employment." |
| littlekope0903 | I feel like there are so many fatshamers in the world who have so much to say about peoples' health |
| rachel_norfolk | Thanks. We always have taken it seriously but maybe not been quite so public about it. |
| rubyji | Disappointed but not surprised to see someone asking to include political affiliation as a protected category. I couldn’t disagree with them more. |
| manleywoman | @littlekope0903 Yup. And plenty of non-parents who love to tell me how to parent properly! |
| cleverington | I definitely could and think the attribution is useful. If their political affiliation involves intimidation, harassment, etc, then they aren’t protected because their behavior has nothing to do with political affiliation, imho. eg: Being in violation of the ToS probably is not a protected state to the ToS. |
| cleverington | In converse, if they are genuinely expressing their opinions (which do not violate the ToS), then they should not be harrassed. |
| damienmckenna | If they're lauding their political affiliation and that political group includes policies which are specifically targeting other protected groups, they might also want to not voice their opinion if other attendees at the event include members of those groups. |
3️ *Recent DDI Events: Retrospective & Link Sharing!*
DDI has been active at Drupal Gov Con and Drupal Europe recently. I'd love to gather some thoughts about how those events went and perhaps share some of the videos of relevant talks.
| sparklingrobots | I was thinking we might want to tune our presentation to be a little more Drupal-focused. |
| sparklingrobots | e.g. how the stated values of the Drupal project do or don't support D&I, the kinds of issues we see in our community specifically. I got feedback that some of the more personal stories I shared were very engaging....I think people hearing that someone in the Drupal community is being awful is more powerful than hearing "people are awful". |
| sparklingrobots | Also, I think it would be a great opportunity to share our values statement and why we do the work the way we do. In Darmstadt I got a lot of questions about how our work isn't centering white folks or men, and when I said that it worked that way by design, people responded pretty well (which was confusing to me? But still true.) |
| dwells-tn | @sparklingrobots I'm sure that would work both ways, too: success stories resonate well when they're in your community. |
| dwells-tn | And to the "people are awful" => you can't do something about human nature, but you can confront bad people in your community. |
| sparklingrobots | I think maybe a slide on tone policing/respectability politics and/or ring theory would be useful. |
| unitoch | yeah, I love the idea of success stories |
| unitoch | this DD&I work is pretty personal, and I'm guessing that almost everybody who would be presenting has some kind of personal success story that they could share |
| sparklingrobots | I'm not gonna lie, most of the stories I shared were not exactly success stories. :joy: |
| unitoch | hahaha, okay, fair point |
| sparklingrobots | e.g. I told a story about how I changed the way I dressed because no one at DrupalCon would take me seriously as a backend dev when I wore a dress. |
| unitoch | not success stories then, but some kind of personal story that helps the audience feel connected to the speaker |
| unitoch | I think both can achieve the same effect |
| sparklingrobots | I mean, I'm 100% in favor of success stories! Just that it wasn't what I shared in Darmstadt. |
| unitoch | depending on the speaker, though, the story is going to be different, so I think you're on the right track to leave it open to be a story of either success or adversity |
| unitoch | both will achieve the same goal, at least as I see it |
| unitoch | I think the slide we put in there should maybe have some example stories and/or prompts |
| unitoch | in the speaker notes, I mean, not on the slide |
4️ *BADCamp & DrupalCorn prep*
What's needed for our upcoming events?
| Redacted | |
| Redacted | |
| cboyden | Hm, I can’t see anything in the backscroll, but it only goes back like 10 days. |
| sparklingrobots | Yeah, it was a couple meetings ago. Hopefully whoever it was will chime in again. |
| bmanning | Can't wait for BADCamp! Excited to see everyone! |
| mdrummond | Hope everyone has a good time. Sorry to not be there. |
| sparklingrobots | I was thinking about creating a #ddi-events-prep channel so we don't have to have a series of them (e.g. the govcon channel, the darmstadt channel). I'm not sure it will work if we get super busy but could be useful in the mean time. |
| mdrummond | That sounds like a good idea. |
| sparklingrobots | New channel created: <#CD2J1EEQJ|ddi-events-prep> Go there if you want to talk about e.g BadCamp, GovCon, etc. preparations |
5️ *CWG Update on Banned Individuals at Drupal Events*
There is an ongoing discussion on individuals banned from community events by the CWG, and how that should/should not impact cons/camps/etc. Again, we wanted to hold some space for folks to discuss and to encourage people to share their thoughts on the issue as well.
| rubyji | I’ve already written my thoughts here and on that post, but I’m interested to hear what others think.
The timing of this with what’s going on in the US Senate this week is really intense for me. I feel very worn down about having to repeatedly explain what the stakes are (ie: my humanity) in these things. |
| sparklingrobots | Agreed @rubyji. The original post had so many questions to resolve and I am really struggling to engage with a post that is bouncing from technical solutions to speculations on how seriously we should take harassment, etc. when I've been at events wondering if so-and-so is going to be there and how I will avoid them. :sad-panda: |
| rubyji | Yes and in fact I’ve chosen not to attend some events like DrupalCon in part because I know certain people and/or their supporters will be there. The lack of accountability is already pushing people out, including recognized leaders who have a record of working for this community. |
6️ *DrupalCon Seattle planning!* :drupalcon:
a) Session proposals are open! Don't forget #ddi-session-prep is available to you at any time to help get your proposals in shape.
b) Is it time to start planning already?! Eeek, seems so soon.
| sparklingrobots | Session proposals are due....end of October, I think? It's coming up and I want to make sure everyone here has a chance to prep something! :ddi: |
| littlekope0903 | I want to submit something regarding accessibility, but I am not feeling super inspired by anything. I've done so many accessibility sessions in the past and I want to be challenged to do something new |
| littlekope0903 | I would love to do a JS talk, but my last one wasn't as fun as a11y talk. |
| kara | Accessible javascript maybe? |
| dwells-tn | Last week, I had some informal conversations about having the Y do one of our trainings at DrupalCon, but I'm still learning about how/if we do that in general. I asked a couple higher ups in the Open Y community, and I don't think I got my question across really well, but it was a two-day conference and not really enough time to get into everything I wanted to re: diversity/inclusion. |
| dwells-tn | There may be a chance of that happening for 2020 since the Open Y core team are primarily based out of YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities. |
| timplunkett (he/him) | Note that this year, sessions will be reviewed starting tomorrow, as a rolling process! This means that you can possibly get feedback from the selection team and respond to it before the final deadline, improving your proposal. |
| sparklingrobots | @timplunkett (he/him) I had no idea, thanks for sharing that! |
| bmanning | Thats awesome Tim |
| timplunkett (he/him) | It's the benefit of not having a DrupalCon Europe this year, the program team got a way early start and has more time. |
| krismaye | I don’t know that I have the capacity to get something together on my own right now, but if anyone’s looking for a co-presenter, feel free to DM me! |
| littlekope0903 | @timplunkett (he/him) that's what I am trying to do |
| timplunkett (he/him) | In addition to <#C3G1G53CN|ddi-session-help>, there is also the general <#CCTDENZK7|session-help> channel |
| bmanning | We just submitted our sessions, so def looking forward to feedback. Happy to help look over anyones presentation to help :slightly_smiling_face: |
| dwells-tn | Also, I mentioned to a Seattle Y person I met that they should definitely come to the Community Summit since it's just down the road from them. |
| cboyden | I submitted my accessibility session for Seattle! |
| sparklingrobots | I'm probably going to submit my "command line basics for site builders" session, and I'm hoping/assuming DDI will submit something. |
| mdrummond | I was thinking of trying to submit the Pitch Perfect session to Drupal Con. Was hoping to test run it at Drupal Corn, and because that crashed and burned I am having mixed feelings about submitting to Drupal Con now. I don’t know. |
| sparklingrobots | @mdrummond It's hardly fair to say it crashed and burned! Life intervened. I think you should submit it, if you are still interested. |
| mdrummond | Well I crashed and burned on doing my part to get the development of the talk going, making the slides, etc. I could have done more on that. |
| bmanning | I agree @mdrummond... our session didn't make it to Dcon last year, but has been very well accepted at other camps. Its given us chances to refine and improve. Def is not a crash and burn, but an opportunity to grow and make it the best. Happy to read over sometime. |
| sparklingrobots | @mdrummond There's always more work to do! Nobody can keep up with it all. I hope you can feel better about it--I really don't think you failed and have total faith the session will come together when the time is right. <3 |
7️ Open floor! Your thoughts, questions, topics are encouraged and welcome. :ddi:
| kara | Oh, the code her camp in dc opened for submissions, not drupal specific so myself and a teammember will submit a drupal 101 thing maybe |
| sparklingrobots | @kara ooh! that sounds awesome. :drupalparrot: |
| kara | Yeah, get to teach myself d8 so i sound like i know what i am talking about |
| sparklingrobots | Haha, the best way to learn  |
| kara | Right |
@bmanning has joined the channel
Hey Brian.

| littlekope0903 | I am starting a side blog on accessibility! I have gotten a fair amount of interest on it and it's really exciting to feel motivated to get it started! |
| kara | Great @littlekope0903! |
| sparklingrobots | Awesome! Feel free to share the link here if you want to! |
| starshaped | I'd love to read the blog :slightly_smiling_face: |
| littlekope0903 | haha it's not launched yet, but if you want to subscribe to my newsletter to hear more about it and some a11y tips, you can use the following link: ....if not I'll share in the next week or two when it launches :slightly_smiling_face: |
| manleywoman | I'm making (small) progress on my inclusion initiative. Slowly but surely |
| sparklingrobots | My job has been making more explicit commitments to improving d&i, including benchmarking our current stats and setting goals for improvement. Makes me very happy. |
| Amelia Rose Khan | My main volunteer group is making more strives to get diversity and inclusion right! Even if this isn't enough, pushing this is helping me stay focused. |
:ddi: :ddi: :ddi: Official meeting is over, but the conversations will continue.
Thank you for showing up and contributing to make this community a better space.
