0️ *DDI Contrib team sprint day* Recap :stars:

:tada: So the <#C76TQUQ2D|ddi-contrib-team> hosted a Virtual Sprint Day last week! :raised_hands::skin-tone-3: It was very exciting to see this planned and happen - and we’re so thankful to everyone who helped and volunteered their time :skin-tone-3: They contributed to 9 modules and Drupal core as well as DD&I initiatives - view the d.o issues worked on here:

*Now, we’d like to hear recaps, feedback and your thoughts? Did you attend and how was it?*

> <#C76TQUQ2D|ddi-contrib-team> is a DD&I initiative aimed at increasing contribution from under-represented and marginalized individuals in the Drupal community. They’re working on new models of mentorship & support around contribution. Learn more about them on in their slack channel <#C76TQUQ2D|ddi-contrib-team>, or their d.o project & issue queue:

amyjune I was unable to attend because it was on a (US) holiday weekend and we were vacationing. I did contribute by tagging some issues for the sprint during my company's weekly sprint. I tried to tag easy to review patches
krismaye I was also vacationing and not able to attend :pensive:
rain Has there been consideration to setting up virtual sprints during traditional work hours or late nights, so as to be able to include parents? Perhaps even reach out to schools and workplaces to see about sponsoring involvement to help mitigate the financial burden of volunteering time for those who cannot afford additional childcare, etc.?
rain (perhaps these have already happened and I missed them... so easy to miss things!)
mdrummond That’s a good suggestion, @rain. Maybe now that we’ve done one of these virtual sprint days there might be the possibility of doing more down the road, and that’s definitely something to consider if we do.
sparklingrobots @rain The time was chosen after a survey indicated most folks wanted a Saturday, but I think we're flexible about future VCD timing. I *love* the idea of sponsored involvement.
rain @sparklingrobots that makes sense. I'm generally curious about how we can make it easier for primary caregivers to be more involved, mostly because I am one. My involvement in the Drupal community has had to drop significantly since having kids, and that is largely because most activities are during times childcare isn't available. At the same time, though, I didn't take the initiative to publicly state these thoughts until after the event, even though they were on my mind well before... it is on me and people like me to be more proactive.
alexdmccabe The sprint day was also 24 hours long, in order to give people time to join no matter what their timezone or other situations might be. I think there was some discussion of making it last the whole weekend instead of just 24 hours, but it didn't go through. That might have been better in the end, because even with 24 hours a busy person (especially a parent!) might not be able to find time to sit down and contribute.
alexdmccabe Rephrasing: it might have been better to make it a virtual sprint weekend instead of a virtual sprint day, in the end, so that more people could participate.
alexdmccabe I think the worry was volunteer / mentor burnout.
mdrummond Maybe spanning it over a Friday and Saturday might be helpful to give primary caregivers a chance to do some contributing during working hours if that’s how they’d like to do so.
rain Ah! Yes, I should pay more attention to the 24 hour part, but even so, weekends are really rough. Though, again, perhaps the demographic I'm selfishly worried about is too small for the ROI involved in making it easy for us, since this will get easier as the kids get older.
sparklingrobots @rain I feel like the whole point of DDI is making it easy for very small demographics (in the Drupal world) to get involved, so I wouldn't say you're being selfish. I appreciate the feedback whether it happens before or after the event. :ddi:

2️ *Our Current Initiatives*

The DD&I leadership team is planning to focus on the following projects for the next few months and would love for you to get involved where you’d like to. Have general questions or want to know how we run initiatives? Check our new documentation:

Feedback and revisions are welcome!

rubyji Let’s try to update the content at as well.

2️ 0️ *Creating a standardized DD&I talk and policy of use for camps*
``

Aside from feedback on the presentation deck so far, we’d love to hear thoughts on things like - should we create a BOF template? A public calendar for events where this talk is going to be given?

rain BOF template and calendar would be great!
mdrummond I was thinking that in conjunction with the speaker initiative, it might be good to try to find or create a calendar that gives some guidance as to when different camps tend to take place. It could help people to plan where they might want to give talks. Maybe that would be helpful for this DD&I talk as well?
kara The actual contents of the bof will vary depending on who is there but would be great to think about bofs before it is time for volunteer signups
dmkelner Definitely a BOF template. People were unsure as to how to lead one in DC. It would lessen the burden.
kara Or there was the rainbow one that had 2 of us in the room and just wound up with us shooting the breeze for an hour
sparklingrobots I have a BoF template I could contribute--it's super simple but has worked every time for me.
sparklingrobots Basically: Ask the folks in the room to list all topics/questions they have, vote on the top 4-5, and then divide the time between the topics.
sparklingrobots Pretty sure I stole that from @stpaultim :slightly_smiling_face:
sparklingrobots I think an event listing would be swell, too. That way we can track where the talk has been submitted, who's involved, etc.

2️ :two: *DD&I Resources Library*
``

We have this awesome up and coming resource library on our website: which needs _more resources added_ and a _better UI/UX_.

Thoughts? Volunteers?

rain I would like to volunteer. But I cannot start until next week. Will circle back on this, and if anyone wants to reach out, I'm here!
krismaye I'm supposed to be looking at the UI/UX... I'll get to it eventually (hopefully sooner rather than later)
sugaroverflow (she/her) @krismaye I don’t know if audits are a thing in your expertise, but if you can do something like that - we can get some people to help out with the tasks
Redacted
sparklingrobots I'm going to be bringing the resource entry piece to Drupal Europe--maybe folks can even enter some resources that aren't in English!

2️ 3️ *Diverse Speaker training and Outreach*
``

While there have been improvements within the Drupal community in terms of improving the diversity of speakers at meetups, Drupal Camps and Drupal Cons, we still have room to grow. Working towards gender parity is one goal, but we also want to make sure we work on increased representation for people of color, as well as for people in other underrepresented groups. And how we can equip them for successful presentations.

mdrummond I just updated the goals and description of this initiative. Very glad to have some feedback on this and continue to update it!
nine.lives.black.cat In my experience, trying to come up with a topic to speak on that I thought would add value for others was the hard part for me. Eventually I got there but it took awhile.

I wonder if there couldn't be a set of topics (like "scenes from a hat" on Whose Line Is It Anyway) where there're topics that have been pretty hot or relevant that we could point people toward? Doing that, they might see a topic that folks are interested in and think "Hey, I know some stuff about that!". It would also be a useful tool for folks that are trying to do diverse speaker outreach to be able to do the same.

nine.lives.black.cat Pairing that with the current ddi-session-help channel/mentorship would possibly yield more speakers in your target market going from concept to presentation. As I've been speaking folks have been giving me feedback and also pointing me to places that could use hearing what I talk about. Practice, repetition, etc.
Amelia Rose Khan What is Drupal Corn?
mdrummond Thanks for the idea about suggested topics, @nine.lives.black.cat. That’s great. One of the things the WordPress talk had was going over how every presentation doesn’t need to be a how-to talk, which I thought was really helpful.
mdrummond Drupal Corn is the Drupal Camp in Iowa. Happening at the end of September.
cboyden @nine.lives.black.cat This spring I went to a very cool session at the Lesbians who Tech Summit in SF called “Find your inner tech talk topic.” It was a card sort/workbook exercise. The contents and explanation of the exercises are at .
cboyden Basically, we all paired up, went through a deck of cards with questions on them, and jotted down quick answers. Then we sorted our answers thematically into 6 groups, and then told our partner about the themes we found and how that might turn into a talk.
cboyden I just submitted it to the resource library

2️ 4️ *Crediting all forms of contribution and not just development*
``

This one is more of a discussion. We’re already seeing a rise in initiatives crediting people for attending meetings (yay!) - what are other ways that we can credit contributions - and set an example for the rest of the community?

Here at DD&I, we credit people when they volunteer for us at DrupalCon or camps and when they help with the website or planning for these events as well. Thoughts?

(There are more initiatives, but I think this is a lot to discuss for today so we’ll move on!)

3️ *DD&I* at Drupal Europe :rainbow-sheep:

:three: 0️ *Are you attending or volunteering?* sign up here:

3️ 2️ *Feedback on the presentation deck for DD&I*

amyjune They look fantastic. My only feedback is that some of the slides have text near the bottom and that might compete with closed captioning.
rubyji Good point!
xjm Yes, text at the bottom is also often not visible to short people particularly because the audience's heads block the lower half of the screen
xjm I try to avoid having any important content in the bottom 1/3 of slides
xjm The deck is beautiful :slightly_smiling_face:
unitoch thanks for the feedback, this was something we hadn't considered.
unitoch I'll try to look at that before the weekend, so that the presenters can see and approve it before giving it next week
sparklingrobots Yes, thank you @amyjune & @xjm!
xjm I think the part that will stir things up is the part about about not tolerating intolerance. Hopefully we can have good conversations about it in the Q&A because it will probably be challenging.
sparklingrobots We'd love to get diversity stats for Germany (since it is the host country) and would love some assistance with this task if anyone has spare time for googling!
xjm I would also recommend making the fonts larger in e.g. the tables of percentages
sparklingrobots @xjm I've been thinking about handle any conflicts that may arise re: the paradox of tolerance. Not totally sure of the best approach, yet. :grimacing:
rubyji I was surprised to not have any pushback about that when we presented at GovCon. It really depends on who is in the room, but I would certainly like more people there who would benefit from hearing these ideas.
hrodrig @sparklingrobots I wonder if there could be something more Europe-specific in the presentation since it's being given there... like maybe efforts that are going on in Europe (I know @DuaelFr has been doing some work), invitation/emphasis on wanting more European membership, etc?

3️ :three: *DD&I presence at Drupal Europe*

Is there going to be a BOF? How’s the booth planning going? What else is happening? :rockcat:

gaborhojtsy BOF at :slightly_smiling_face:
sparklingrobots Also, if you're able to cover a booth shift, please add yourself here:
sparklingrobots I'm really only hoping for coverage during breaks. ^^
ekl1773 I need to do that… will try to sort out my schedule while I’m traveling today/tomorrow!
sparklingrobots We need cardboard cutouts of ourselves to put at the desk with a sign "Find these people and talk to them!"

4️ *Announcements & Celebrations*

We’ve been adding this agenda item recently celebrate the wins! I’d like to thank all of the people who were a part of making a successful <#C76TQUQ2D|ddi-contrib-team> virtual sprint day :skin-tone-3: :skin-tone-3: because that was a first of it’s kind and I was so happy to see it happen :raised_hands::skin-tone-3: :tada:

What else can we celebrate? :slightly_smiling_face:

5️ *Open Floor*

Please bring up things you’d like to discuss! Or DM me to do it anonymously~

rubyji D’oh! I just now remembered that we were going to start putting our pronouns in the introduction thread.
rubyji I’m going to edit my post there.
xjm Just one sort of out-of-scope question -- how do the minutes get exported to issue-friendly format? Is there a github repo or such?
sugaroverflow (she/her) @xjm Sally has a JS script that performs magic. I’ll dig for the link and send it to you
xjm Thank you!
sugaroverflow (she/her) can’t seem to find it, ping @justafish for that magic script pls

rubyji D’oh! I just now remembered that we were going to start putting our pronouns in the introduction thread.

:skin-tone-3: oops, I forgot! Starting next week for sure!

sparklingrobots We'd love to get diversity stats for Germany (since it is the host country) and would love some assistance with this task if anyone has spare time for googling!

:ddi: :ddi: :ddi:
Official meeting is over, but the conversations will continue.
Thank you for showing up and contributing to make this community a better space.

➤ To send feedback about DD&I, the leadership team, anything really (even anonymous love letters _wink_):
