Description:

This introduces a new installation profile to Drupal core, called 'demo_umami'. This is an experimental/demonstration installation profile, to be used for evaluation of Drupal (and site building/theming), but not as a starting point for a custom website.

The profile has configuration for a website for a fictional publishing company, publishing articles and recipes for a food magazine.

To support this, there is also a theme provided called 'umami'. This theme is marked as hidden so it does not show up on the /appearance page and should not be used as a standalone theme.

In future releases, we plan to introduce more features to this installation as they become stable in Drupal core, such as media management, content moderation, and layouts.

What is the goal to offer such a specific profile into Core? I have always thought that it was up to developers outside of the core to team to build themed profiles like 'for a restaurant' or 'for higher ed' or 'for a hotel' or 'for an event'. I'm not against the idea of core offering profiles for specific industries or event types - but with so many parts of Drupal 8 still settling in - is this the right time to use resources on this type of project? Please understand that I'm just trying to understand the underlying reasons - not to be a wet blanket or be the "no" guy. :)

Hi,

We have been working on this for over two years now to make the "Out of the Box" experience for Drupal better than it currently is. Here is some background

I'm pretty sure Umami exists as a sort of "concept" for what Drupal can be like. It's designed to impress and inspire potential users of Drupal, so that they can see what Drupal can do out of the box. It's not designed to be used as a "starting point", but rather just as a demonstration.

I think we're meant to install it, check it out, try it's features, then get rid of it and start a new website with one of the other basic installation profiles and build the site we want using them instead, hopefully inspired by Umami.
