Here's a patch which works for 'url' fields without titles.

In very best case this is a feature request and not a bug.

I have not implemented it as url module is unpopular and link module is the way to go. Link module got into core and maintaining something that is on a death road makes no real sense to me. You should investigate to switch to link module. Priority is porting linkchecker to D8. D7 may not get any new features anymore.

Aside of this, your patch is incomplete as missing all the automatic update bits.

D7 reached its EOL back in January 2025, and there is no active release for D7 for this module anymore.
Development or support is not planned for D7. All D7-related issues are marked as outdated in a bunch.

If the issue remains relevant for D10+ versions, merge requests with proposed solutions for a new module version (D10+) are welcome in a new follow-up issue.
