I have difficulty in locating the 'link' to go back from content preview to content editing (upper left of screen): text overlays preview content and as the background seems to be transparent it does not pop up clearly enough.

Is it possible to modify the background?

Are those links styled by your admin theme? Mayo is not a good admin theme if that's what you are using.

Not using the admin theme (plain user): I attached how the preview looks like with the default bartik theme and with mayo ...

In "Appearance" set the Administration Theme to "Seven" and check the box by "Use the administration theme when editing or creating content". Other than that I won't be able to help.
