I have a use-case where my editors want to pull in data from an external source (in this case an XML feed) and display that data in a table on their site. I'm not sure how many other people will need this feature, but I'll develop it as a patch and leave it here. If there is interest we can consider adding it to the project.

The functionality can be provided as a sub-module allowing to only enable it if needed. Just like was done with #2871843: Provide themeless output of a node's tablefield on the path 'node/%/themeless'.

It is certainly an interesting feature, especially if also JSON would be supported.
