I would like to change the following url:

http://mysite.com/field_collection_item/11

to:

http://mysite.com/awards/custom-name

How do I do it?

Change url path of field collection using pathauto module.

Follow this steps:-

1) Go to admin >> Search and metadata >> URL aliases >> Settings.
2) Check Field Collection Item in ENABLED ENTITY TYPES.
3) Go to Patterns tab and Click Add Pathauto pattern.
4) Select Field Collection Item in Pattern type.
5) Click Save.

This will help you change URL path field collection.
