Problem/Motivation

Currently \Drupal\node\NodeForm::form() and seven_form_node_form_alter() work to split the node form into two columns.
This code runs after the entity display.

If using the experimental Field Layout module to change node forms to have two columns, this will incidentally create 3 columns.

Additionally, form_alter implementations that relocate fields will have conflicts

Proposed resolution

Configure node.module to use a layout for node displays

This is postponed on #2834025: Mark Layout Discovery as a stable module, because either node.module or field.module has to get a dependency on layout_discovery.module, or the functionality of layout_discovery needs to be moved into system.module

damienmckenna’s picture

Wouldn't this break backwards compatibility regarding the display of node forms? Maybe it's a reason to keep the layout_discovery module around, to put the necessary logic in there?

tim.plunkett’s picture

Oh, I also forgot that #4 isn't just about layout_discovery, but also field_layout.
Additionally, we could add a default layout for use with Field Layout module that doesn't affect the rendering at all, for 100% BC of markup.

We should also be tackling

        // Move the 'moderation_state' field widget to the footer region, if
        // available.
        if (isset($form['footer'])) {
          $form['moderation_state']['#group'] = 'footer';
        }

As seen in content moderation.
