The modules readme.txt file mentions a settings page to set the compression method but I can't find any code to reference that in the actual module itself. Is that something that got pulled out in the 6.x version?

Oops. In the most recent version of the module the settings page was pulled. This module now respects the compression settings of the jQuery Update module.
