jhodgdonI agree, although you can only do the unpacking on the server if you have server terminal access, which some people may not have on some hosting situations. So, we might need to think a bit more about exactly how to write this.
vegantriathleteYou don't necessarily need server terminal access. I've found that the file manager included with cPanel setups has both an extract and a compress function.
jhodgdonOh, that's a good point!
So... would you like to propose new text for those two steps? I think the "edit source" link is still broken (I assume so, the issue hasn't been touched), but if you want to just type in the text you propose in the issue here, I can apply it to the txt file.
Thanks!
vegantriathleteLet me see about taking a swing at this on Monday.
jhodgdonGreat! Much appreciated.
And if I didn't say so already, thanks for reading through the guide carefully over the past few days, noticing problems, and best yet making all those issues! We cannot improve the Guide unless people point out problems they notice.
We did subject the Guide to some testing with novice users, which was good for pointing out where things were unclear, and catching some of the "you didn't talk about this yet" types of problems (and you caught a few more, great!). But it's also very useful to have someone like yourself, with experience, to look it over for accuracy. Joe and I tried to make sure it was accurate, but ... again, sometimes a fresh perspective is useful.
jhodgdonAsciiDoc source editing should be working again!
vegantriathleteHere's my revision of the document.
jhodgdonThanks, this looks pretty good!
A few small suggestions:
This line also needs a small adjustment (follow the downloading, then the uploading/unpacking...)
I am not sure we need these sentences about how to upload the files to the site. Probably we don't. We don't tell people how to upload the Drupal Core download in the Installation chapter, so we probably don't need to do it here either.
Come to think of it, that installation chapter should also be revised to suggest uploading the archive and then unpacking....
This is vague "a directory". Let's be more specific.
jhodgdonComment #11
baluertlAn unnecessary "and" has been left in the last line.
vegantriathleteThanks for the review @jhodgdon and @Balu Ertl! I've made the changes as requested.
As far as being more specific about the directory. we've already told them where to upload the compressed file. All that's left to do is to extract the files from it; the correct directory will be created during the extract process. I've just simplified the sentence to read "Extract the files on the server."
vegantriathleteGah! I had done the interdiff in the wrong order. Sorry about that. Here's the interdiff done in the correct order.
jhodgdonThat's better, thanks! I think maybe it needs one more pass...
Later on in this topic (with your edits), you've called this "compressed file"... in other topics we've just called it "tar.gz or zip file"... maybe we should do that here, or else in this line, add the word "compressed" just to be clear?
There should be a blank line before the header, and another between the header and the first step. Sorry, missed that in the last review.
You deleted a whole directory, and you're uploading one file, so "the one" is a bit confusing, because you didn't delete a compressed file.
How about:
... same location as the directory you deleted...
If we're going to explicitly suggest this command, maybe we should also suggest they download the .tar.gz file above? Either that or also provide the unzip command.
Also, what if they are hosting on IIS?
Hmmm....
So. Maybe what the text before the command should say is:
Extract the files from the archive, making a subdirectory in the same location as the archive file. For example, if you have terminal access to your hosting server running Linux, and you downloaded the _.tar.gz_ file, you can use a command like this:
How about something like:
If you do not have terminal access, your hosting control panel's file manager should provide a way to extract the files.
Note: I don't think "Extract" should be capitalized here.
vegantriathlete@jhodgdon: I'll work on your changes this morning. The unzip command is pretty straight forward. However, one difference is that when you unzip a file there is no compressed file left to remove. Do we want to go down that path? Then we'd need to be more careful about the step in which we say to delete the compressed file. Instead, we'd have to say something like, "If you used a .tar.gz file delete it from the server." We'd probably also want to be more explicit about what they'd expect to see when they extracted the .tar.gz as opposed to the .zip. With the former, they will have both the .tar.gz and the new folder. With the latter, they will just have the folder.
vegantriathlete@jhodgdon: ping! Please share your responses to my questions in #15.
vegantriathleteSorry, maybe you didn't realize I was waiting for feedback since I didn't take it out of "needs work." There still isn't anything new for you to review, yet. I'd just like your feedback on my questions before I take the next pass at it.
jhodgdonSorry, I was out of town a few days and just got back last night... catching up with issues... Let's see.
Regarding #15, how about if we just tell them to download the .tar.gz file, so that we just have one set of instructions?
jhodgdonSetting status back to needs work...
vegantriathlete@hodgdon: Okay, I'll just reference the .tar.gz file and proceed with the rest of the changes as discussed.
vegantriathleteLatest patch and interdiff attached!
jhodgdonThis looks great -- very clear. Thanks!
My only concern now is this sentence near the top:
This case (you created the module or theme) now doesn't really have instructions, because in this case, you would have a directory of files on your local server that you'd need to upload, not a .tar.gz file to upload/unpack. The previous instructions covered that case because they said to extract the .tar.gz archive locally and then upload the directory of files, but since we're not suggesting that any more, this part at the top doesn't quite make sense now in the context of the rest of the page.
So, can we put in a step that explains what to do in this case, and revise this sentence?
vegantriathlete@jhodgdon: I was waiting to see if you were going to say anything about when the user has created a module or theme ;-) How about if I say that if the user has created a module or theme to compress it into a .tar.gz file?
jhodgdonHm. I'm not sure if people who don't run Linux as their desktop would know how to compress their own directory into a .tar.gz file?
vegantriathleteYeah, this is why I didn't bother putting anything about that. I think we are trying to cover too many cases. If somebody knows how to create a custom module or theme, I would think the person understands how to get it onto the server. That person should know how to either create a tarball or a zip file and then extract it once it's on the server. I think it may be better for us to not even talk about the case in which a person has created a custom module or theme.
jhodgdonFair point... I think we still need to say something, because we have pointed to this page as instructions when you're installing a custom module/theme that you or someone else created... so OK, let's just say to zip it up into an archive and then follow the upload/unpack instructions.
vegantriathleteHere's the latest!
jhodgdonLooks good... a couple of very small things and I think we're done:
So this should say just to skip the downloading instructions, right?
Otherwise, this looks good.
nitpick: I'm not sure why there is a blank line before this command but not after. It seems like there should either be two blank lines or no blank lines?
How about here saying just:
Delete the compressed file from the server, unless your unpacking method already deleted it.
vegantriathleteAre we having fun, yet?
jhodgdonOK, this is now perfect! Or at least wonderful. Thanks for all the iterations. :) I'll get it committed shortly (in the middle of something else at the moment). We'll need to update now 5 translations as well, and add notes to several issues for them, so I don't want to do it when my mind is elsewhere.
jhodgdonCommitted. Adding notes to
#2830965: [ES] Traducir este archivo fuente: extend-manual-install.txt
#2806465: [CA] Tradueix aquest fitxer extend-manual-install.txt
#2803559: [HU] extend-manual-install.txt lefordítása
Comment #33
jhodgdonOne other note. The "Preparing to install" topic already has similar instructions to unzip on the server, phew:
https://www.drupal.org/docs/user_guide/en/install-prepare.html
Comment #34
vegantriathlete@jhodgdon: I have done a
grep -r pload . | lessin the English source to find any instances of the word {U|u}pload.extend-module-install.txtandextend-theme-install.txtare already being worked on with #2828615: Installing/updating module/theme topics need clarification about FTP. Let's just pay attention to whether we need a similar fix. The page mentions using the web interface and using Drush. It does not mention manually uploading an archive.security-update-core.txtmentions uploading specific directories. Do we want to get into changing the instructions to explain uploading the entire archive and then doing the operations on the server? I think we are opening up another large round of iterations to that document if we decide to change the process to be like we did for this section. One point worth noting: Step 5 says to download the latest version . . . to . . . your server. Then Step 7 says to upload . . . However, if the archive has been downloaded to the server then there is nothing to upload. So, I think we've got something to fix one way or the other in this document.install-prepare.txtas you already noted does suggest uploading and then extracting the archive, though it doesn't give any specifics how to do the extract. If we are explaining how to extract a file in this document, which is many chapters later, then why aren't we explaining in that document?Comment #35
jhodgdonThanks VERY MUCH for that analysis!
I think we should open up another issue to address install-prepare, which should add some specifics similar to what this page now has.
And then another one to fix security-update-core so it actually makes sense and/or has instructions that work. That would be a good thing. ;)
Want to create them? Or I can...
vegantriathleteI've created the issues and referenced this one.
jhodgdonThanks very much!
