Drupal 8 version of the Select2 module will be released in 3-4 months.

We already have a working implementation of select2 in https://github.com/thunder/select2

It would be nice if you could push that code as a D8 branch. I don't have to be a co-maintainer.

I have just tested https://github.com/thunder/select2 in our project and it seems to work quite well.

+1 for moving it over as 8.x-1.x branch.
