In some places the class 'accessibility-hidden' is used to hide text without blocking screen readers.
But this isn't needed because drupal already has 'element-hidden' with the correct use of 'clip' as suggested by WebAIM: http://webaim.org/techniques/css/invisiblecontent/

Using the default standard is really the best. Will make it easier to upgrade to D8 too in time.
