I have been using the Advertising Entity module. It abstracts the advertising types with plugins so any ad server/provider could be used. It comes bundled with a submodule that adds supports DFP.

I wonder if this module is needed given that ad_entity may have better support and is a more abstracted implementation of placing ads.

With an alpha release Status should be Need review. Alpha released after setting Closed (Duplicate)!

Also, currently an issue for D9.
