im getting a grey box -but it has a google logo inside of - so i'm thinking this sounds like a gmap<->google maps API issue.

see attached screenshot, also there is a javascript error (also in screenshot)

Check some baselayers on the config screen and save it.

Shouldnt it say "No baselayers have been selected" ? or this was only an issue during an update to a certain release of the module?

OK, fixed in http://drupal.org/cvs?commit=123725.

Also, the beta contains an update that will fix up the baselayers for people migrating to it.
