Is this still being developed? PHPMailer could be a clean, robust and standards compliant SMTP only solution. We're starting to use it on a range of different sites (surveys, contact, commerce etc.) and can help with reviewing issues and providing patches.

Current 8.x-3.x issues. We're using a patched/modified version which I've made available on github for anyone who's interested.

Per #8 I think the D8 module should be marked as officially unsupported. I'll try to kick off the normal process by reaching out to a higher power on slack.
