Function ctools_entity_from_schema_get_children() does a lot of calculations, but the result is changed rarely. I suggest to add at least static caching of its result.

The 3 year old patch in #2 to entity_from_schema.inc applied cleanly to the latest ctools 7.x-1.x-dev and (if applicable) still needs to be reviewed.
