Problem/Motivation

Date input formats on date fields currently are currently not localized.

On the other hand we've date_input_format() which itself takes into account the side wide short date format variable_get('date_format_short', 'm/d/Y - H:i') which is localized by locale module itself.

Proposed resolution

Expose the site-wide configuration option in the UI

Remaining tasks

User interface changes

API changes

Data model changes

I'd say this makes perfect sense. However, I think it's hard to understand what "Site wide" means. Should we add a hint into the field description?
Should it be the default option too?

What about not mention the side side aspect but explain that its the short date format?

Hmm, yeah I think this is better.
Even though it could raise the question why the heck aren't we using just the defined date formats anyway :D
But that's a whole other topic.
The patch:

  • is clean.
  • is understandable - from an end-user perspective too.
  • just exposes a feature that's available anyway.

I'm bold and say RTBC.
