Hello,

I am trying to sort a view by date field, but it seems that footable does not recognize the filter criteria. If I change from footable to a simple views table filter criteria works properly.

Is this behavior a bug or is it just happening in my installation?

You can set sortorder for your Footable view from "Format" section Settings (i.e. admin/structure/views/nojs/display/article/page/style_options). For more details please find attached screen shot (i.e. footable.png).
