Data blocks in CSV format?

What approach can one use for processing data blocks in CSV format, as an alternative to data blocks in XML format?

Using the feeds module to create Drupal nodes from such CSV input file seems like one approach (forena could then just handle the resulting nodes). But I wonder if there is some type of SimpleXML-variation (or anything else) that could be used to make forena support CSV files similar to what is possible with data blocks in XML format.
