Enable and Disable CCK fields without deleting that field

I want to enable or disable the CCK field, Currently if we delete the CCK field then it deletes the content for that field. So I want to remove a specific field without losing the data. Is it there way to have enable disable check for fields under "manage field" for content types. I require the same field and all its data in future, so I can simply enable the field.
