Readonly text field

Is it possible to set up a CCK text field to be readonly? What I'm wanting to do is have some php code that generates a (default) value for the field when the form is rendered, let the user see this value on the form (only during node creation/edit mode though) but not allow them to edit it, and then save that value with the other form values into the database.
