what about making the drupal product available in rpm format
i know, installation of the tar ball is so easy that this should not be necessary. however, there are at least two advantages
1) the process of upgrading is not triggered by a sysop who follows the community but by a iup2date alike process. when security vulnerabilities are known, this could come in very handy
2) the rpm might be included in distro's, enhancing the reach of drupal
disadvantages: someone has to make the package and make sure the latest stable version is available in rpm as well

killes@www.drop.org commentedThe problem is that we'd need somebody who maintains the rpm. The Debian
package is already sort of unmaintained (still 4.0 IIRC).
killes@www.drop.org commentedI have to apologize to Hugh Espuny, the .deb maintainer: It is up to date (4.1).

killes@www.drop.org commentedWe have a new Debian maintainer, but apparently nobody wants to do a .rpm. Not too much of a loss.

mok000 commentedI have packaged 4.6.3, and I am willing to maintain the rpm. I plan to package several themes and modules as well.

roball commentedDag Wieers is maintaining a drupal6 RPM package for RHEL/CentOS based systems in his "rpmforge (rf)" repository.
Alternatively, the SRPM from the updates channel for Fedora 11+ can be rebuilt. I just did this on a CentOS 5 server:
