When editing the node/add and node/edit pages, the field groups should be offered as panes.
Here is a patch that solves it. It is a kind of follow up to #1226034: Field group module on node edit incompatible with panels node edit template.

This patch works for me on custom node/edit panels (Drupal 7.34 / CTools 7.x-1.5 / Panels 7.x-3.4).

Out of curiosity, bc last time I needed this I went and did a silly form alter in a custom module-- What is the recommended Panels way of achieving the fieldsets or field groups in a node edit form Panels override?

Patch #1 also works for me with CTools 7.x-1.6 and Panels 7.x-3.5

Please apply the patch to the 7.x-1.x-dev branch as soon as possible for the maintainer and perhaps take issue #1278618: Panels integration into consideration at the same time because both add a ctools_plugin.

This is not yet perfect. I see problems when there are more than one field group and base form is added to a different panel pane.

MustangGB made their first commit to this issue’s fork.
