I got an error message when installing image-6.x-1

I extracted the content to the folder on my server, went to Admin / Site Building / Modules
checked the boxes to enable
and when I clicked save configuration I got the message

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: drupal_install_schema() in /home/balazs2/public_html/drupal/sites/all/modules/image/image.install on line 39

How do I successfully complete the installation?

I don't suppose you're using Drupal 5.X? If so, you picked the wrong version of the module.
