The Token module 7.x-1.5 or later is recommended, as it provides essential assistance for writing templates, but Mail Editor can work without it, too.
Besides a number of bug fixes the use of the new token pop-up dialog should end the extra-ordinary memory consumption that some sites have been experiencing.
