The patch above only adds sorting for 'publish on' date - this patch extends that to include sorting and filtering views for publish and unpublish dates.

Just noticed that neither of these include the 'option' => 'string' to enable custom date formatting for views_handler_field_dates()... will try to re-roll a patch including this soon.

Original request fixed in #245967: Add sort information for views and #197114: views filter and argument integration.
If someone needs the option proposed in #2 above, file a separate feature request.
