Hey, I wrote a "related module" called imagecache_defaults. http://drupal.org/project/imagecache_defaults. It detects broken image paths and replaces them with a default image.

Shameless self promotion, but I made the module public domain because I thought people other than myself would find it useful so I'm letting the maintainers of imagecache know that it exists :)
